Gameplay is a little different from standard DOOM 2 play. Instead of being thrust into a maze of corridors with a definite start and end, you're dumped into an open arena. Once the clock starts, you'll have to deal with a succession of 60 second rounds, each of which changes up the gameplay rules randomly to keep you on your toes. After a certain amount of rounds, a boss monster spawns. The game ends once either you or the boss monster dies.

Sounds simple enough, right? Well to be honest, it is, but it can be tricky to deal with when a ton of fireballs, bullets, arrows and canines are whizzing past your head. Remember to stay calm!

Game Modes

When you start a game of Reelism, you'll be presented with a choice of three modes to play. These subtly effect gameplay.

Standard Play

Five Rounds, One Boss Round

The default Reelism experience. 5 rounds, a boss and done in time for dinner. This is what gameplay is designed around, so start here!

Endurance Mode

Ten Rounds, One Boss Round

Double the violence! Double the chaos! DOUBLE THE ROUNDS! Can you make it through all 10 unrelenting rounds before the boss shows up? And then the boss? I bet you can't.

Infinite Mode

Endless Rounds, with a Boss Round every five rounds

A sardonic reminder that, in the end, we can never truly triumph but through our demise. The game doesn't end after you kill a boss, instead triggering another five round cycle. How long can you last before you inevitably expire in a tide of blood and fur?

Boss Practice

One Boss Round

Remember how you always wanted to skip the main course as a kid and just eat the ice cream? Jerk. This mode lets you fight a single, random boss straight off the bat in a monsterless arena, allowing you to practice dealing with each unique supervillain and their varying traits.

Shuffle Mode

Play through every reel, then fight a boss

On top of being Generation Remix, we've also turned out to be Generation Throwing Stuff Out Once We're Bored With It. In this mode, you'll have to play through EVERY SINGLE REEL before a boss will show up. The good news is that once a reel has been rolled, it won't roll again for the rest of the map. The BAD news is that once a reel has been rolled, it won't roll again for the rest of the map...

Boss Rush!

Fight every boss on a special map

You think you're big time? You're gonna die big time! Take on every boss, one after the other with no cover, masses of monsters after you, and a serious dietary deficiency. We've never managed to actually finish this mode ourselves without cheating, which is a testament to both our quality QA practices and our intense inability to play the computer game good. Will you be the first?
